Drug and Alcohol Training

ETU Victoria is very pleased to announce we have formed a new partnership with Alcohol & Drug Awareness Australia to provide ALL members access to an eye-opening Drug and Alcohol Awareness session.

Why is this important?
We want every ETU member to have access to the right information and the right support when it comes to these substances, to fully understand their effects on health and wellbeing, on their detection periods and your related rights at work. So, we are funding this on your behalf and encourage you to attend one of the allocated sessions.

Alcohol and Drug Awareness Australia (ADAA) has pioneered the development of a robust Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training Program for the workplace. The ADAA program has a positive effect on the health, safety and wellbeing of Australian workers, and, by extension, on the health and safety of the community.

The statistics in this country alone present a call to action:

  • 10 percent of workplace deaths are drug or alcohol related,
  • 25 percent of workplace accidents are drug or alcohol related, and,
  • 61 percent of people reporting frequent use of drugs or alcohol are in full-time employment.

Beyond the workplace, the cost to our community is devastating, with the highest cause of death in Australia between the ages of 18-44 being suicide. Over 50% of suicide toxicology reports show drugs and/or alcohol in the system.

With ADAA recognising and dealing with these issues, they foster improved workplace relations and performance, and help support the required change in culture around these issues.

Uniquely, ADAA workshops are delivered by trainers with 'lived experience’ of the personal and public risk of alcohol and drug dependence. They share their real-life stories of strength and hope and are inspiring to anyone that attends.

Some of the key things you will take away from the 2-hour session on drugs and alcohol are –

  • Gain an in-depth understanding of your workplace Drug and Alcohol Policy and your rights.
  • Understand the effects of alcohol and drugs on the body and brain.
  • Understand how long different drugs stay in the system.
  • Understand the legal risks and rights around drugs and alcohol.
  • Understand how these substances impair work-performance, judgment and capability.
  • Gain an understanding of the nature of addiction.
  • Gain an increased awareness of how affected individuals can impact on the safety and welfare of co-workers.
  • Recognise the importance of fostering a supportive and open workplace culture.
  • Learn self-help strategies, as well as strategies for approaching and assisting work-mates, family members and friends.
  • Learn where help and advice may be found in dealing with AOD issues.

The interactive ADAA workshops provide an enlightening view of how we can start to recognise and address these issues in Australian workplace and communities. Our union is funding these sessions on your behalf and we strongly encourage you to attend one of the allocated free session times.
